A Certain Kind: Discipleship Essentials
Witnessing
John 4:1-30
"We may need to go into places others won’t, to reach people others don’t, because they’re valuable to God and his mission.”
Question#1 Why are so many in the Canadian Church paralyzed when it comes to sharing their personal experience with Christ?
Question#2 Why does witnessing cause us so much anxiety?
Bible: Please turn to the book of John 4:1-30
Part I: The Why
Why pass through Samaria?
(Jesus) left Judea, and departed into Galilee.
He had to go through Samaria.”
(John 4:3-4)
Jesus is less about comfort and more about Kingdom.
What was so important in Samaria?
“So he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar,
near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son, Joseph.”
(John 4:5)
That was his mission – to reconcile the world to God. (2 Corinthians 5:19)
Jesus not only sets the example of the Why we are to witness (Reconciliation) but also shows us How to over come our fear (Empowerment/Method).
Part II The HOW
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) (John 4:7)
Witnessing tip#1: Witnessing begins with asking genuine questions that will lead to other opportunities to share the gospel.
Application: Can you identify your Samaritan people? Make a list of all the places you visit each week.
- Where you buy your gas
- Where you shop for groceries
- Where you get your hair cut
- Where you get your car fixed
Witnessing Tip #2: Be ready to share your testimony and answer any questions through the scriptures not through personal experience. Make sure to point people to Jesus. He saves, not us.
Witnessing tip #3: Don’t be afraid to talk about sin but it’s imperative you provide the hope for overcoming that sin.
Witnessing tip #4: Introduce people to the Living God- Share the gospel.
Witnessing tip #5: Don’t be afraid to use your own struggles as examples of God’s great mercy and grace.
So what is the take away?
We are not alone
We are called to go to Samaria, everyday
Alistair Begg shares “ The Grace of God does not relieve me of my responsibility to be obedient; the grace of God makes Possible my obedience.”
Don’t fear witnessing. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8
