Jesus: The Reason for the Season
Why Don’t You Come and See?
Luke 2:15-18
The Angels give the highest theology
“Good news of great joy will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you, he is Christ, the Lord.”
What is given? Salvation
How’s it given? Born of a Virgin
Where’s it given? Town of David (Bethlehem)
To who is it given to? Not just Israel but for all the nations
From who is it given? A Savior…who is Messiah, the LORD
This is the only time in the Gospels this phrase is used
This is the only time we see all the titles of Jesus brought together
Savior, Messiah, Lord
This last announcement was not just good news but also a revelation of Jesus’ true identity.
Step 1 - They went (v15) When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
The shepherds considered the truth they heard and responded.
The sheep who hear the truth declared every week from this pulpit need to consider what is being said and respond to it.
Step 2 - They saw (v16) “So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”
- How often do we take our eyes off of Jesus and put them on the things that steal, kill and destroy?
- How often do we raise one hand in worship while gripping onto the sin we love with the other?
- We are easily distracted by things that bring us comfort and ease.
- We naturally have a bent towards things that gratify the flesh and often we get into patterns that leave us on the side of the broad road looking for solutions outside of Christ.
Step 3 - They testified (v17-18) “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.”
Have you ever noticed the one true thing that connects every human-is our sin?
Step 4 - They Worshipped (vs20) “The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”
They did nothing to qualify them to be the ones to receive this announcement.
