On the Move - Wisdom for the Journey
The Greatest Commandment
Deuteronomy 6:4-25
Moses started his second sermon by reviewing the Ten Commandments which outlined the stipulations of their covenant relationship with God. Next, he encouraged the second generation of Israelites, who were on the move toward the Promise Land, to “be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn to the right or to the left” (5:32). Now, in Chapter 6, he gives them the ultimate motivation for being careful to live a life of obedience to God, which must be our greatest priority as well – LOVE the LORD your God!
Three realities of loving the LORD through obedience:
1. It must involve our whole-being (vs. 4-9)
- “Heart, soul and strength” implies “with every part of you” and that “this is important” (cf. Rom. 12:1)
- This is a love that flows out of our hearts and permeates every area of our lives (cf. Jn. 14:21; 1 Jn. 5:3)
- This is a love that is consistently demonstrated both in the privacy of our homes and publicly outside of our homes (vs. 7-9)
Are you loving the LORD your God with every part of you and is that important to you? Are those who watch you in your private life and public life seeing the same thing? Are there ‘things’ in your life that you love more than God? When you have to choose between them and God, which will you choose?
2. It must never be neglected (vs. 10-19)
- When the going is good, don’t forget the source of all goodness (cf. James 1:17)
- Daily demonstrating covenant love for the LORD will guard against pride and self-reliance (Pr. 11:2-3; Micah 6:8)
- Remember the LORD your God is a jealous God, do not put Him to the test (cf. 1 Cor. 10:9)
How are you doing stewarding all the good things the LORD has graciously and generously given to you? Are there any areas in your life, as you ‘eat and are satisfied,’ where you are in danger of drifting into self-reliance or compromise? In the ‘blessing,’ do you acknowledge and thank Him for His grace to you? Do you fear Him and are you serving Him only?
3. It must influence the next generations (vs. 20-25)
- Our love for the LORD, through our obedience, must be easily seen by the next generation (1 Cor. 10:31)
- Our love for the LORD, through our testimony of God’s goodness, must be heard by the next generation (Ps. 66:16; 78:4)
- Our love for the LORD, through making disciples, must be experienced by the next generation
Are the values and practices of your home any different from those who are not in a covenant relationship with God? Do your motives and actions affirm that you are living in a right relationship with God? Are you enabling anyone younger than yourself to become a fully devoted disciple of Christ?
