The Cost of Compromising | Is Not Worth It
When individuals and churches entrusted with the message of the Gospel compromise and fail to stay vigilant in guarding against the Devil’s schemes, “spiritual disasters” occur. Sinful choices have a devastating impact, not only on people, but also on the credibility of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the witness of His church. The cost of compromising is not worth it!
The cost of compromise is a big deal:
1. Disregarding God’s authority is a big deal to HIM (vs. 1-5)
- “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows…” (Gal. 6:7-8)
- God’s anger is just and purposeful, and it helps His children to recognize their sin, repent (turn from it), and follow Him in obedience (cf. 2 Chronicles 7:14; Heb. 12:4-11)
- His anger emphasizes His holiness and the seriousness of sin
Are you deceived in thinking that your sin is not that big of a deal to God? What do your life choices reveal? Are you disregarding His authority by making sinful choices? If so, be aware that because He loves His children, He will discipline us for His glory and for our good.
2. The glory and honour of His Great Name should be a big deal to YOU (vs. 6-9)
- “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…” (Matt. 6:9)
- The burden of your heart should be that the world would see how holy and glorious God is (cf. Mt. 5:16; 1 Cor. 10:31)
- Time spent in the presence of God will help you keep the right perspective (cf. Mt. 26:36-44; Mk. 1:35; Lk. 5:16)
Is there anything in your life that is not bringing honour and glory to the great name of our God? As a follower of Jesus, is it a regular part of your life to humble yourself in His presence and just linger there? Or are you too preoccupied with trying to figure out life in your own strength?
3. The collateral damage of personal sin should be a big deal to EVERYONE (vs. 10-26)
- Never underestimate the amount of damage each of us can do when we are outside the will of God
- Our sin affects others, sometimes seriously. Therefore, we must take it seriously and deal with it (cf. 1 Cor. 11:31; 1 Jn. 1:9)
- We are one body in Christ; we belong to one another, we need each other, and we affect each other (cf. 1 Cor. 12:12, 26)
The next time the enemy tempts you to think, “this sin won’t hurt anybody,” do not be deceived! It will not only hurt you, but it will also negatively impact and hurt those around you (family, friends, church, workplace).
God is holy and He is not to be disobeyed. There is a cost of compromising!
