Samuel: Hearing God's voice

1 Samuel 3:1-21

Full Service

How important is hearing God’s voice - God’s rights to speak?

1. The absence of God’s voice signals the presence of God’s judgement (2:27-3:1; 4:21-22).

“The lamp of God had not yet gone out”

Symbol to Israel to keep the lights on! (Ex. 27:4; Num. 6:25; Ps 27:1)

2. Hearing God’s voice is a gift of knowing the Lord (3:7).

Hearing requires knowing; knowing involves hearing.

“My sheep listen to my voice” (Jn 10:27)

God reveals himself through is word; through relationship he is revealed.

His claim on our lives comes to us through his word.

3. Everything moves forward from God’s voice - it is true and certain (3:11-14,19).

None of his words fall to the ground - what God has to say will never fail to accomplish his purpose (Is 40:8; Lk 21:33).

4. We are transformed by the power of God in his words (3:15-21).

Those who hear should stand out noticeably.

Those who welcome (obey) the voice of God will hear from him regularly.
