On the Move - Wisdom for the Journey
Make THE Wise Choice
God's Word makes it very clear that He is sovereign over our lives (cf. Prov. 16:9). However, that does not negate the fact that the choices we make on the journey impact our experience. This is why Moses kept driving home the same point with Israelites who were about to take possession of the Promised Land: make THE wise choice and enjoy the road ahead!
Two principles God wants His people to hear, recognize, and learn for the journey:
1. Obey the Lord your God and enjoy the road ahead (vs. 1-14)
- Obedience is a choice, but God has established the standard for it (vs. 1)
- Obedience is proof of three things: the genuineness of our faith, our love for the Lord (cf. John14:21), and God’s gracious work in our hearts (cf. Eze. 36:26-27)
- Who we are should fuel our desire to fully obey the Lord our God (1 Pt. 2:9-10; Ps.51:12)
Are others able to easily recognize your faith in Jesus Christ and see your love for Him by your actions? How are you travelling? Are you keeping your eyes fixed on Jesus, daily putting His words into practice? Or do you find yourself turning to the right and to the left, following other gods and serving them?
Renew your commitment today to fully obey the Lord your God.
2. Disobey the Lord your God and the road ahead will be rough (vs. 15-68)
- Like obedience, disobedience is also a choice (James 1:13-15)
- Unlike obedience, which brings God’s blessing, disobedience invites His judgment and discipline (Heb. 12:5-10)
- Unrepentant disobedience can lead to a hardened heart and disregard for the glorious and awesome character of God (cf. Heb. 3:10-15)
How many blessings have we sadly missed out on because we chose to go off of God’s path and selfishly pursue our own evil desires? Have you recently hit some rough patches on the road because of your choices? Are you living with insecurity, fear, and dissatisfaction (cf. 28:65-66)?
Confess and repent from your sins. Ask God for mercy and forgiveness for your sins. Follow the Lord your God, fully obeying Him and carefully following all His commands and enjoy the road ahead.
“Like the Israelites, our call to relationship with God in Christ and to bear His name is a glorious privilege, to which we must respond with faith demonstrated through obedience to the revealed will of God!” (Dr. Daniel Block)
