Is Jesus Even Relevant?
Acts 2:1-47
What is relevant today?
Climate change
Large scale international conflicts
Religious conflicts
Poverty
Government corruption / incompetence
Which headline would be considered more relevant?
“Living forever has been officially discovered!”
Or
“Jesus is appointed Lord and Christ!”
What if you discovered the first is dependent on the second – how relevant would Jesus then become?
In the first sermon preached after the crucifixion of Jesus, Peter addressed two questions that are as relevant today as the day they were preached…
What does this mean?
What shall we do?
1. What does this mean? (Acts 2:1-21)
The Feast of Weeks (Harvest) (Lev. 23:15, 16)
Wind (Gen. 1:2)
Fire (Ex. 13:21, 22)
Tongues (Is. 28:11, 12; 1 Cor. 14:21; Gen. 11)
3000 people respond (Ex. 22:28f)
Promise (Joel 2:28-32; Jn. 14:5-15; Acts 1:8)
God, as promised, is pouring out his Spirit on people and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Acts 2:17-18, 21)
2. What shall we do? (Acts 2: 22-39)
By raising Jesus from the dead God appointed Jesus both Lord and Christ, so that the forgiveness Jesus prayed for from the cross can happen for you!
On the cross Jesus paid for your pardon (Acts 2:22-23; Lk. 23:34).
By Jesus resurrection death has been made powerless (Acts 2:24-32)
By his ascension (exultation) Jesus has been appointed both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:33-36)
As your Lord he has the authority to pardon you.
As your Messiah (Christ, Saviour) he is your only rescue from the coming wrath of God.
As both Lord and Christ, he alone pours out the Holy Spirit upon those who call on the name of the Lord.
Repent - turn from you and surrender to his Lordship
Be baptized - publicly identify yourself as a subject of Jesus
Pardon and Divine Presence will be yours – requirements for living forever!
