Experiencing Life
God’s Bread: What it means to be fed by God
John 6:1-71
Traditions that surface memories
“The Jewish Passover Feast was near!” It’s time for “that” was “this”.
The stages of God’s redemptive journey: from what happened, to what now must happen...
1. Where have we seen this before? (6:5; cf. Ex. 16:15; Num. 11:13,14; 2 Kgs. 4:42-44) PHYSICAL
“Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” (6:5)
Passover expectations—
- Exodus deliverance from bondage
- Escape through the Red Sea
- Miraculous life-saving manna
God is protector, provider, deliverer.
When did you get here?
Why are you looking for me? What do you really want?
Do not work for physical food; work for food that endures to eternal life!
THE WORK OF GOD IS THIS: TO BELIEVE IN THE ONE HE HAS SENT (6:29)
2. What did all of “that” mean? (6:35) SYMBOLIC
Moses didn’t feed you , God did, which is why I was able to feed you in Bethsaida.
The true bread from heaven - “For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (33)
“I am the bread of life.” (35)
3. What do I need to do now? (6:50-58) SPIRITUAL/MYSTICAL
Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (53)
“Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so THE ONE WHO FEEDS ON ME WILL LIVE BECAUSE OF ME.” (57)
You must eat my flesh and drink my blood.
Just as bread provides physical life; Jesus, the bread of life, alone and only, provides spiritual life.
Is this a hard (harsh/offensive) teaching to you?
- An exploiter of Jesus (6:14,15,23,26)
- Offended by Jesus (6:41-43,60-63)
“...no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.” (6:36-40,65)
- Feasting on Jesus (6:50-58,68)
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty...for my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (6:35,40)
Are you open and willing to receive the bread of life?
