The Great Christmas Recall
CHRISTMAS: A Recall on Moralism - Jesus as Saviour
John 1:4-13
Product Recall Description: Product is trying to fix itself.
Post-Christian Moralism—trying to find light from within the human condition
“Christian” Moralism—taking the moral principles of Scripture and trying to please God by living them out, not from our relationship with Christ, but from sole effort of the flesh.
Defect Diagnosis—the transformative repair must come from outside of oneself—from the Maker.
Correction Requirement—welcome Jesus
The human condition is broken because we have intentionally preferred to not understand and remain in the dark about the Maker of life. (Jn. 1:4-5)
- The Son of God is the only source of life and counteractive to the deadness of sin. (1:4)
The Word has life in himself (Jn 5:26)—Christ has not derived life from anything; all that is alive derives its life from him, because “in him (alone) is life.”
- The LOGOS is the only possible hope of defeating darkness. (1:5)
For God who said, “let light shine in the darkness,” has made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. (2 Cor. 3:18)
“The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and to those who were sitting in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light dawned.” (Matt. 4:16)
…and the darkness did not “comprehend/overpower” (katalambano) it (light) (cf. 1 Jn. 3:6)
The human condition is broken because we have been so busy making ourselves, we have not recognized the One who made us. (Jn. 1:10)
The human condition is broken because we are so busy chasing after material things that we have no room to welcome spiritual things and have not received Christ. (Jn. 1:11)
BUT… To ALL who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God. (Jn 1:12)
