A Shout Out | To Our Mighty Warrior
In revisiting the details surrounding a true miracle on the plains of Jericho, what we discover about our “Mighty Warrior” will help us on our journey when we face seemingly impossible situations.
How to experience God’s victory:
1. Willingly surrender to His authority (vs. 5:13-6:5)
- “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Ps. 24:1; cf. 1 Cor. 6:19-20a)
- Before becoming consumed with how God is going to take care of our “hopeless situation,” we need to focus our minds and hearts on who He is and take comfort in His sovereign authority over our lives (cf. Ps. 46:10-11)
- Victory over our situation “rests with the LORD” (cf. Prov. 21:31b)
Do you regularly pause to remind yourself of God’s rightful authority over you? In the face of an “impossible" situation, be still and know that He is God, and willingly surrender to His authority.
2. Exercise your faith by fully relying on the presence and power of God (vs. 6-16)
- Even though victory rests with the LORD, that does not mean we sit back and do nothing. We are to actively exercise our faith in God (e.g. Noah, cf. Ex. 40:16; Heb. 11:7)
- When we are not sure what the Lord is doing, we must remind ourselves of what we do know: He goes before you; He is with you; He will never leave you; He works for the good of those who love Him; nothing will separate us from the love of God (cf. Dt. 31:8; Rom. 8:28, 38-39)
- Remember it is “not by might nor by power, but my Spirit, says the LORD Almighty” (Zech. 4:6; Ps. 20:7a)
Who or what are you relying on to get you through life’s challenges? Would your time with the Lord in prayer, in His word, and in worship with His family indicate that you are fully relying on the presence and power of God?
3. Prioritize obedience in your desire for victory (vs. 17-25)
- No obedience – no victory – no joy (cf. Dt. 28:1-14; Jn. 15:9-11)
- In our desire to see the victory, let’s not miss out on the character work (sanctification) God wants to do in us along the way (cf. James 1:2-4)
- When He grants us the victory, stay vigilant to guard against the temptation of the evil one (cf. 1 Cor. 10:12; 1 Pt. 5:8; Eph. 6:10-11)
Let us not deceive ourselves, we will not experience God’s victory in our lives if we are not daily willingly surrendering to His authority, exercising our faith by relying on His presence and power, and obediently following His commands. Not experiencing His victory? Which of these three areas are you neglecting?
