Hold On Hang In
A Greater Understanding of the Perfect Offering
Hebrews 9:11-15
The Hebrews preacher is trying to tell us two things today:
- The Old Covenant and New Covenant are pointing out something about sin.
- The Old Covenant and New Covenant are pointing out something about God.
Chapters 1-9 Comparisons and Contrasts (adapted from the Bible project) [W=warning]
Jesus Vs. Angels/Torah (1-2)
[Jesus is superior to the angels who delivered the Torah; God’s word to the Israelites and all other messengers, [W] If Jesus is greater than the angels we need to pay attention to his message.]
Jesus Vs. Moses and the promise land (3-4)
[Jesus leads his people like Moses lead the Israelites. [W] Do not rebel like the Israelites did and lose out on God’s gracious offer to enter into the new creation.]
Jesus Vs. Priests/Melchizedek (5-7)
[Morally Flawless, Jesus is the ultimate priest and mediator between humans and God. [W]Instead of rejecting him accept him and be fully reconciled by God]
Jesus Vs. Sacrifice and Covenant (8-10)
[Jesus death on the cross was a permanent sacrifice. [W] He died once for all, so accept his gracious offer of forgiveness.]
The Cross of Christ is effective:
- A remedy affecting the conscience (9:11-28)
- A remedy offering forgiveness (9:11-14)
- A remedy needing no repeating. (9:23-28)
So what is the take away?
- We need to Respond
- We need to Remember
- We need to Refocus
- We need to Rejoice
How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleansing our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God. 9:14
